I love the amazing perspective so many of you young people of color are bringing to the forefront. And how can I not relish a statement such as, "I am what an intellectual property attorney looks like." No wonder the devil is growling in Washington.
Thank you so much — that truly means a lot. I’m deeply grateful to be part of a generation of creatives and entrepreneurs who are redefining what leadership and representation look like.

When I was working in a marketing department, I fell foul of copyright with a piece of music that had two co-writers.
I negotiated for its use in a TV commercial with the writer who lived in my city and who had made the song famous. He even ended up recording a fresh version, just for us.
He said he'd square things away with his co-writer who was living on the other side of the world. Except that didn't happen.
We found out when our legal department received a letter from the co-writer's lawyers, on the other side of the world, once campaign had gone live.
It turns out their relationship wasn't what it used to be. I learned an expensive lesson: negotiate directly with each stakeholder, don't 'assume'.
That’s such an important story — and a powerful reminder of how many layers there are in creative ownership. It’s so easy to assume good faith or clarity in collaborations, but as your experience shows, alignment on rights needs to be explicit and documented.

This was such a sharp breakdown. I’ve learned the hard way that clarity isn’t just creative, it’s protective. Systems save you from those “borrowed moment” risks by keeping every asset trackable and legit.

Not the same thing, but cautionary nonetheless...

I'd love to Ruky, but that's 2am here in Sydney. And you know I need my beauty sleep. :-)
Yes! Hope to see you there :)
Brilliant breakdown 🙌🏾
